By the late 1880s, wealthy Victorians from the cities were arriving at Sunapee Harbor on the 600-passenger steamboat Edmund Burke, which also brought tourists to other hotels and landings around the lake. In 1887, the 650-passenger Armenia White was launched, the largest steamship ever to sail on the lake. Kearsarge was launched, and there followed a succession of steamships until automobiles made the steamships redundant. Watch our video so you will know the available parking areas for parking your vehicle and/or your vehicle with boat trailer. Prior to the 1870s, Sunapee’s economy was based off of farming and on the 20 or so mills and industries powered by the Sugar River, which flows out of the lake at the harbor.

Sunapee: Exploring This Charming Town

Your group may want to arrive early to enjoy Sunapee Harbor before your cruise. There are unique shops, an art gallery, eateries, historical museum, and Saturday afternoon entertainment. Activities for hotel guests ranged from concerts and ballroom dancing to more active sports of tennis, riding and sailing. The hotel had its own bowling alley and a boardwalk leading to the harbor.

The Mt. Sunapee State Park campground is located about a mile from the beach and offers lean-to and platform sites for family camping in a natural setting. Sunapee’s tourism isn’t all about the past or for those with lakeside cottages. The Anchorage is a harbor institution, serving food and drink for more than a century.

A daytime Scenic Lake Tour or Dinner Cruise gift certificate is a wonderful gift idea to celebrate an anniversary, birthday or to surprise that someone special in your life.

Sometimes the same old, same old restaurant celebrations can get a little, well, stale. No matter how beautiful the decor in a restaurant, it is inherently static – your view out the window generally doesn’t change all that much during the meal. If you are looking for an experience that combines the best of a sunset sail with a scrumptious buffet dinner, head to Lake Sunapee – we have just the tour for you. We spent a few days in Sunapee this fall, enjoying the views of Mount Sunapee’s summit and then-green ski trails from the terrace of The Lodge by Sunapee Stays. The former motel on Burkehaven Road is now a small resort, with a garden-encased heated pool and suites decorated in Adirondak-style with log beds and natural wood finishes.

Locations Around the Globe

If you want to wander around and shop, Sunapee Harbor has tons of options for you. Stop by A & E Harbor Shop, which is partly operated by two local, young entrepreneurs! This shop is perfect for Lake Sunapee themed home décor items as well as one-of-a-kind gift items and clothing.

Departing from Sunapee Harbor, a narrated boat tour on Lake Sunapee is a time-honored way to spend an afternoon. Come aboard, relax in your deck chair and enjoy the beautiful scenery of Lake Sunapee. Your knowledgeable Captain will provide a narration of the  history, landmarks and lore of this crystal clear mountain lake. The cruise provides for great photo opportunities with amazing sunsets, lighthouses and mountain views so have your cameras ready. Your guests may want to bring a light jacket or sweater aboard the cruise. It is sometimes breezy on the lake, and the open part of the top deck is fun to enjoy.

Repeat guests bought some of the cottages, others built new ones on the land around the hotel, and the summer community of Burkehaven was born. Burkehaven’s St. James’ Episcopal Church, one of the nine Episcopal summer chapels in New Hampshire, still has Sunday services in the summer. The grand hotel is no more, but Burkehaven continues to thrive as a cottage community. Boaters can put their craft in at the public boat launch or rent or charter almost any type of watercraft at Sargent’s Marina. There is a reasonable amount of free parking right next to the waterfront and there are the all-important public rest-stations nearby. Our perfect summer evening in Sunapee Harbor began with a dinner cruise on the MV Kearsarge, a replica paddlewheel steamboat that has traveled the lake for thirty years.

You can even test out your golf game when you need a break from boating at Eastman Golf Links. They have been open since 1973 and are rated 4-stars by the New England Golf Guide. They have a newly renovated clubhouse, fully trained staff, and multiple tee options – it’s no wonder they have been voted the best golf course in the state of New Hampshire multiple times! After all of your exploring, the Lake Sunapee area is home to some amazing restaurants! The Anchorage Restaurant and Lounge is a popular spot located right on the water for a lakeside dining experience. They have an expansive menu of burgers, soups and salads, and seafood options that will leave your mouth watering.
